Carol Atherton was born in Merseyside and studied English at St Edmund Hall, Oxford. She has been an English teacher for thirty years and has written widely on issues related to English in the secondary curriculum.

Her book Reading Lessons: An English Teacher’s Love Letter to the Books that Shape Us was published by Fig Tree in 2024, and was shortlisted for an Indie Book Award.
