
Feminism and a focus on women’s history has famously tended to enter cultural consciousness in ‘waves’ which crest and then dissipate. This means that as a society we still lack a common, sustained foundation in the varied achievements and contributions of women to our culture and history.
Each generation must start again looking for clues to their past.
I passionately support End Sexism in Schools project so that we can counter what is a still dominant patriarchal narrative of history, that obscures the full range of female identity and potential.
Dr Catherine McCormack is an art historian, academic and author.
She has taught at University College London, University of Oxford, Sotheby’s Institute of Art (University of Manchester) and is the author of ‘Women in the Picture: Women, Art and the Power of Looking’ and ‘Defiant Women: The Art of Activism’, as well as numerous exhibition and catalogue texts for international museums and institutions.
