Drawing on research from End Sexism in Schools, Sasha Smith examines the underrepresentation of women in Key Stage 3 history teaching. The article highlights findings from ESIS’s report The Great History Heist, which revealed that 59% of Key Stage 3 history lessons make no mention of women and that only 5% of schools teach a named woman across every National Curriculum period. Smith argues that the limited inclusion of female historical figures risks reinforcing the idea that women only matter in history when they are exceptional, and explores practical ways teachers can create a more representative and inclusive curriculum.
