Why we should ditch the most popular GCSE English texts

“Research shows that merely adding new books to set text lists doesn’t lead to true diversity in GCSE English. To really make a change, we need to start removing the old faithfuls, writes End Sexism in Schools’ English lead.”

Our own Rachel Fenn writes in the TES about how the most popular GCSE English texts need to be removed from the curriculum.

The research shows that teachers consistently make the same choices from the set text lists, year after year, no matter what new choices are added. The only way to see real change is to remove the pale, stale, and male default texts.

‘The gap is worrying’: Young men and women are increasingly split on gender and politics, study finds - image of top view of black coffee and milk on reversed black and white background. Like yin and yang with beverages.
